One of the products Keys was promoting at the show is her new
digital keyboard — Alicia’s Keys, which is expected to be in production
in about three months. Keys collaborated with programmers and sound
engineers to digitally reproduce the exact sound she wanted for her
digital instrument.
Keys said the idea behind creating Alicia’s Keys was to provide a
high-quality — but still affordable — instrument that would inspire
young musicians from all backgrounds to devote their lives to music.
“When I sit down and play this piano, I want to compose,” she said.
She also played a song on Yamaha’s new Avant Grand piano — an
electric grand piano with precisely programmed sounds and strategically
spaced speakers that make the entire instrument resonate as the
musician plays — just like a real 9-foot concert grand.
But for the press, even the trade publications, the real draw to the
Yamaha convention booth in the Marriott was Keys herself. Her sonorous
voice and virtuosic command of the keyboard kept even the most jaded
industry professionals in rapt attention.
“(The piano) is almost like a friend,” she said. “But it’s even
better than a friend, because it doesn’t talk to you. Not that you
don’t want your friends to talk to you, but sometimes you just need
someone to listen.”
Keys said she was enjoying Anaheim and had tentative plans to visit Disneyland after the convention.
“I never get to see the city outside the arena,” she said. “It’s
like its own little city. It’s good to see the convention area buzzing
with life. After this, we’ll probably go over there (Disneyland) and
catch a few rides.”
